December Challenge: Make it Meaningful

We are so excited to be partnering with Ancestry on our final challenge of 2019! How in the world has an entire year passed of doing these challenges? We have learned so much and truly loved it.

For our final challenge during the month of December, we want to do something meaningful. Immediately, we thought of Ancestry. They are changing lives and connecting the world to their past and present.

We learned firsthand how eye-opening it can be to take an Ancestry DNA test. Although we are identical twins, we got completely different DNA test results! You can read that blog post here.

How to Make it Meaningful

So, for the month of December, it was clear our challenge should be MAKE IT MEANINGFUL.

For us, this means making family interactions more valuable this year by trying something new. Instead of talking about the weather, we are going to ask real, thought-provoking questions.

We are realizing what a wealth of knowledge our family members are and how little we have dug into the past.

Brooke at Britt at Ancestry.com's headquarters in Lehi, Utah.

According to a new Ancestry® survey, nearly three in four Americans (70%), even more so millennials (80%), wish conversations with their family during the holidays were more meaningful.

So, everything from conversation starters to family tree connections are going to be covered this month in the challenge.

People Crave Connection

We realized in creating this challenge that we are really missing out on connecting to our ancestors and it turns out many Americans feel the same way.

In a recent Ancestry study, 37% of Americans “strongly agree” they wish more members of their family knew about their family
history.

This is likely because there is a knowledge gap – more than one in ten (14%) Americans know nothing about their family tree. More than half (59%) of Americans don’t know the year their grandparents were born.

Do you know when your grandparents were born? I’m embarrassed to say I have no clue! It’s a wake-up call for me to ask my one remaining grandmother all of these questions while she is still alive and I have the chance.

Parker holding a few Ancestry conversation starter cards in his hands.

Simple Conversation Starters

The good news is, all it takes is a simple conversation to change this!

To start things off, I have 10 simple ideas for conversation starters you can use at your upcoming family gatherings to make them more meaningful.

  1. What is your most treasured family recipe?
  2. Is there a legendary love story in your family?
  3. Tell me about a family tradition that goes back generations?
  4. What family story have you heard once too often?
  5. Is there a family heirloom you treasure?
  6. What is your ideal place for a family reunion?
  7. In a movie about your life, who would play you and your family members?
  8. If you could invite any famous person to join your family for dinner who would you choose?
  9. Do you have an infamous family member?
  10. What three adjectives would your family use to describe you?
Parker holding 3 different conversation cards with different questions on them.
Brooke, Parker, Sam, and Britt laughing while sharing family stories.

We Hope You Join Us

This is a challenge that is close to our hearts and we hope you will join us in connecting to your past. Each of our stories is so unique, it’s a tragedy when we don’t take the time to find out where we came from and who came before us.

How to create the perfect Christmas card

family photo outfits

Tis’ the season for holiday cards! It is time to decide if you are sending a cheery Christmas card to all of your family, friends, and neighbors. As you sit down to decide upon your card this year, I wanted to share a few tips to make the process a little less nerve-wracking.

family photo for Christmas card

The picture is the most important part of the card

A picture is worth a thousand words, therefore I like to let my photos do most of the talking when it comes to holiday cards. Listed below are some important things to think about when selecting photos to include on your card.

Christmas card photo

Make sure your photo is clear

First and foremost, is the photo you are sending out to all the people you care about a high-quality photo that looks crisp and clear? Nothing is worse than seeing that your gorgeous family photo looks pixelated and blurry on your cards. It is also frustrating to receive blurry photos in the mail when you want to see your loved ones clearly. An easy way to make sure you have crisp photos is to work with a professional photographer, which leads to my next point.

Holiday card photo tips

Plan a family photo session

Plan a family photo session with a photographer. It is rare that a candid photo on your phone is appropriate to send out on your holiday card. They rarely successfully show everyone’s faces clearly while including the entire fam in the picture. To remedy this problem, schedule a professional photo shoot with a photographer that is getting paid to make your family look good! It’s their job, therefore most of them are really good at it! Some ideas for the best locations for photos:

  • Your home: your kids are comfortable there and you don’t have to worry about a tense car ride to a photo destination.
  • The mountains: you can’t go wrong with a pretty mountain backdrop. Bonus points for cozy sweaters and scarfs!
  • A Christmas tree farm: we did this for ours last year and LOVED it! They looked festive without being too over-the-top. You can see them here.
  • Cityscape: change things up and hit downtown for a different vibe in your photos. This could be fun if you have previously done outdoorsy photo shoots in the past and are looking for something a little different. Britt and Sam did their engagements in the city and they are lovely, you can check them out here.
  • A park: never underestimate the beauty of a simple park. Utah boasts parks with rivers, waterfalls, and majestic backdrops so we might as well put them to use! We both went with parks this year as the backdrop for our Christmas card photos. (Britt did hers in the summertime with sunshine and blooms at a historic park. I chose to do mine at a brand new park nestled at the bottom of a canyon with a river running through it and tons of foliage.)

Show your personality

Now, it is great and NECESSARY to pick a photo that shows off you and your family member’s personalities! Steer clear of anything too serious or stuffy. Think about the kind of photo you want to be sending, probably something to make whoever receives it smile!

Toddler family pictures for holiday card

Choose a card with a front and back

Use the advantage of cards with both sides! That way you don’t have to narrow your picture choices to just one. We usually have a picture of the entire family on the front and then a picture of just our little ones on the back. It is nice to offer variety without throwing in a 20 photo collage that looks messy.

Chatbooks Holiday card selection

Use technology to your advantage!

We have it SO easy these days with so many resources that make Christmas and holiday cards a breeze. Our personal favorite is Chatbooks (a Utah company) that specializes in photo books but also offers HUNDREDS of options for cards. Their cards are professional, pretty, and super simple to make. I am not kidding when I tell you that it took me less than 5-minutes start-to-finish to create my cards this year! Use promo code: TWINTESTED40 for 40% off your cards this year – woohoo!!

Celebrate Everyday Challenge

As part of our celebrate everyday challenge for November we wanted to dedicate one day to getting holiday cards done. Holiday cards are usually pretty simple but can get tricky when you don’t set aside time to get them done. I have been known to order mine the week before Christmas which ends up being completely nuts! So make today that day and feel even better about getting ahead of the game by using TWINTESTED40 for 40% off your cards! Then you can check that item off your holiday to-do list! Chatbooks added gold foil designs this year to their collection and they are GORGEOUS! Go check them out here.

Make a list and check it twice

I am married to an Xcel spreadsheet lover which comes in quite handy at times like this. Over the years he has curated our holiday card address list. He updates it when friends and family move and regularly adds people to the list. This makes the sending process so much smoother! And it is a relief not having to nag people for their address every year around the holidays.

If nothing else, have fun!

A mailbox full of holiday cards from family and friends is a happy occurrence. Know that you are sending out little bits of happiness that make people smile. If you love to write a 5-page letter with your card every year, please don’t let this guide stop you. If you love to include 10 photos, instead of just two – do it! Bottom line, do whatever makes you happy and let your personality shine through!

Happy card making!

September: The Money Boost Challenge

We are so excited to announce our new monthly challenge! All year long, we have been brainstorming how we can do a financially focused month, but still, have a good time. We have finally figured it out!

We are partnering with Experian to share real, actual steps to get a Money Boost! They are a company that is widely respected for using data to help consumers make better financial decisions. They have created free tools to help consumers educate themselves and earn more money.

So, throughout the month, we will be sharing what we have learned.

We know many of you are in a similar stage of life as we are – buying your first home, purchasing cars, and having children. This means that along with all of these huge life changes, you have huge financial responsibility.

First up, we both signed up for Experian Boost™. Experian Boost is a free, groundbreaking online platform that allows consumers to instantly influence their credit scores. It’s FREE!

Using the new platform, consumers can grant permission for Experian Boost to connect to their online bank accounts to identify and access utility and phone payments. After a consumer verifies the data and confirms they want it added to their Experian credit file, an updated FICO ® Score is delivered in real-time. That means that in some cases you can change your FICO Score almost instantly!

Hundreds of classes taught by emeritus faculty with the opportunity to learn and engage with fellow members of your community sounds pretty great, right? All it takes is a signup form and $50!

members of the University of Utah's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Lifelong Learning has many different facets

During the month of August, our monthly challenge is #LifelongLearning in partnership with the University of Utah’s Continuing Education program. Studies have shown time and again how important it is to keep learning throughout our lives – whether you are 25 or 105!

If you are “50 or better”

The OSHER program at the University of Utah states, “The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Utah offers a rich and evolving array of courses, lectures, and special activities, taught by distinguished emeritus faculty, scholars, and community experts. Members from all walks of life bring a lifetime of experience to the classroom and our activities. If you’re age 50 or better, come and join us!”

Have you ever been referred to as age 50 or better? We think that is a pretty great way of looking at life!

We are signing our parents up for the Osher program!

It is obvious that we are not yet 50-years-old and cannot participate in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. However, our parents sure can! It was our goal this month to get them signed up as Osher members and to help them to find a class they would like to take.

Two members of Osher

Being an Osher member is fun and affordable

The Osher Institute makes learning incredibly affordable, fun, and easy. Professors at the Institute always mention how much they enjoy their time with their more seasoned students.

Here is a peek at some of the upcoming classes:

– History of Flight
– Mindfulness Retreat
– Masterpieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
– Intro to Kiln-formed Glass Stringer Plate
– La Caille Wine Tasting & Tour
– Final Cut Pro Basics
– Why You Love Country Music, Even If You Don’t
– Our Genes, Our Future, The Revolution
– Mind Over Matter
– Foraging Wild Foods for Healthy Eating
– Yoga For All Bodies

A few things that separate the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is its event schedule.

They host Lunch & Learn’s that are FREE to Osher members where they can bring a brown bag lunch and a friend and hear lectures on everything from Einstein’s theories to How to Improve Your Landscapes and Planting!

Special Events

Another feature of the Osher program at the University of Utah is the Special Events or in common terms, field trips! Sidenote: I remember when the Osher group from the U of U visited Fox13 and watched some of our show live in the studio. They had great questions and it was fun to meet the diverse group of people.

Special events coming up include a tour of the Salt Lake City cemetery (many notable Utahn’s have been buried there) and a visit out to Antelope Island State Park (great for bison watching and sunset views).

Four Osher Special Events are included in the basic $50 membership per term. Now that is a deal! To get registered or help your aunt, uncle, friend, neighbor, or parent get signed up go here. It would be a great birthday present or Christmas gift!

July Challenge: Put Your Phone Down

No more distracted driving

put your phone down in the car challenge for July

Drumroll please… the July challenge is officially “Put Your Phone Down In The Car”. We have partnered with Ken Garff Automotive during the 100 deadliest days of summer to try and do our part to stay safe on the road.

Why did we choose this challenge?

We noticed that we had our hands on our phones A LOT while driving. Usually, it was small things like changing the music, reading a text, or taking a picture. However, distracted driving accidents happen by making decisions that usually only take seconds, like looking down at your phone.

picture of green mountains and a blue sky

It’s against the law

If you didn’t already know, it is against the law to be touching your cell phone while driving in Utah and many other states. So if nothing else – save yourself some money and a bad mark on your record by not touching your phone in the car.  picture of pretty flowers

We wanted to play our part in raising awareness about the 100 deadliest days of summer and helping in our own way to get closer to the goal of zero fatalities on any highway.

brooke and britt with their babies

We want to keep our babies safe

Our number one priority is our babies and we want to keep them safe. It is irresponsible to touch our phones or any other device in the car while driving. This is our come to Jesus month where we are making a commitment so that we can create a new habit and keep our family safe on the road!

Fun along the way

Throughout the month, we won’t be all business and no fun. We plan to crowdsource a roundup of the best podcasts to be listening to RIGHT NOW as well as our favorite Spotify playlists. And don’t think we forgot about giveaways, we will be helping to keep your car looking it’s best this month with some great giveaways!

So follow along @TwinTested on Instagram and let’s make a difference together!

3 Hidden Gems in Salt Lake City

We have loved exploring our hometown this month and have found a few hidden treasures we want to tell you about. We thought we knew it all living in Salt Lake City for 30 years, but we were so wrong!

First up, Tracy Aviary. It’s located inside Liberty Park in downtown Salt Lake City and is easily accessible. We went on a Monday afternoon and basically had the place to ourselves. Having not visited since 4th grade, we didn’t remember much. Well, we were so impressed! Tracy Aviary is truly a beautiful sanctuary for birds. With gorgeous trails and landscaping, you feel like you’re transported somewhere completely different. They have done a great job of making it educational and pretty. The bird shows are fantastic, I’ve heard adults and kids alike rave about them.

We were shocked by how much fun our toddlers had! They loved seeing all of the birds and playing in all of the different recreation areas. We will definitely be going back!

Next on the list of hidden gems is the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. It is located at the University of Utah and showcases amazing art work. We were impressed at the range of artists and styles and also everything they do to make the museum family friendly. You can check out a free family backpack when you arrive. It’s filled with fun, hands-on activities that make the museum come alive for kids.

Third on the list is the Lion House Pantry. Did you know lunch or dinner at Lion House Pantry is included in your CONNECT PASS? We hadn’t visited since our friend’s 8th birthday party, so it had been a while 🙂 One thing we have never forgotten is THE ROLLS! They are legendary for a reason and everyone in Utah should get the chance to try them.

To get your own CONNECT PASS, go here.

Our favorite dinner restaurants in Salt Lake City

We’ve been asked several times to create this post and are finally getting around to it! Sharing our favorite restaurants to eat in Salt Lake City, no matter your price range.

Cheap Eats $5-$12

Chunga’s Mexican Food: They make the best burrito in Utah, make sure you order the al pastor. They make it daily and usually sell out.

Costa Vida: It just always sounds good! A Utah classic, we actually like different things here. Brooke usually goes for the sweet pork burrito, while I love the chicken salad.

Median Price $12-25

Citris Grill: Yummy and local. We went here a lot growing up and have always loved it. They have something for everyone and it’s a laid-back environment if you want to take the whole family.

Ruth’s Diner: Our pick for patio dining in the summer. You can’t beat the atmosphere and the food is great too! We have fond memories of running up and down Emigration Canyon on Saturday mornings in high school all because we would promise ourselves a mile high biscuit if we did it. It was worth it every time (and that’s saying a lot!) Love this place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The Dodo: A classic! We order the off the menu “Dirtybird Salad” every time we go. It has the most delicious lemony dressing and is topped with piles of turkey and yummy toppings. You also cannot leave the place without ordering a slice of pie, our favorite is the Tollhouse.

Expensive $30-$75

Franck’s: tiny gem of a restaurant next to Tuscany. Perfect quiet restaurant to celebrate an anniversary or special occasion. We’ve never tried anything there we didn’t like.

Sicilia Mia: We recommend you order the Carbonara or any of the house-made pastas. We put it on the expensive list because we think it’s a place you should take advantage of their amazing appetizers and sides. Some of the best Italian food in Utah!

How to get into Salt Lake’s top attractions for half price!

The Leonardo is a state-of-the-art museum located in the heart of Salt Lake City. Directly across from the beautiful City and County building and next door to the grand city library, it’s in a perfect location. We explored it for a day with our families and want to share 3 things you may not know about The Leonardo.

Things to do in Salt Lake City

  • The museum is named after Leonardo Da Vinci. Which is why they created The Leonardo Studio – it’s a permanent exhibit at the museum that frequently rotates different art activities. Painting, drawing, coloring, folding, cutting, molding, even filming — it’s all here. All visitors, no matter their age, are invited to let go of their inhibitions and participate in something more than “arts and crafts.” The studio is designed to find the inner artist in anyone.
  • The Leonardo has hosted a number of big name exhibits, including Body Worlds, Mummies and now the first in the United States to host Green Hero by Jackie Chan. The famed actor came to open the exhibit himself. It features art installations built from old movie sets. While working, Jackie Chan realized the enormous waste created on the sets of his films and in an effort to make a positive change, he began commissioning artists to repurpose the materials into a series of incredible and imaginative sculptures.
  • They have all sorts of neat hands-on experiences, including the Tech Take Apart Counter, where they show you what’s inside various tech creations from past times. They even dismantled an old piano to see exactly how it works. This is included in your admission to the museum.

Jackie Chan's new exhibit in Utah

You can easily spend an entire day inside The Leonardo – building, imagining and being inspired by your surroundings. Luckily, it’s included in the Visit Salt Lake Connect Pass! If you don’t know about it yet, it gets you into 16 of the hottest attractions in Salt Lake County for under $100.

#MoveChallenge in March

It is time to announce the #MoveForMarch Challenge! We have loved doing monthly challenges in 2019. They motivate us to try something new for around 30ish days and see if it sticks! In January we did the #GetReadyChallenge where we got ready every day of the month – even Saturday! Why? Because studies show that you are more productive throughout the day if you just get ready or presentable. We found this to be quite true. Once you got getting ready out of the way you are ready to move onto bigger and better things throughout your day. In February we did the #MakeYourBedChallenge. There are books written about the daily practice of making your bed. We knew we wanted to incorporate this habit into our daily routine so we gave it a go. We loved the result of a clean and tidy bedroom! We also loved seeing so many of you tag us in your #MakeYourBedChallenge pictures!

move fitness challenge

For March we wanted to yet again do something that would be stimulating and motivating and we decided it was to MOVE our bodies! We both exercise regularly, but this month we plan to try new workouts, do new activities with our toddlers, and hopefully get active outside in the Spring weather.

So what classifies “move”? That is up to you. If you decide to do 100 squats in your kitchen while making dinner that is awesome! If you decide to take the stairs at work every day instead of the elevator that is great too!

march fitness challenge tips

We are looking forward to hearing everyone’s ideas and sharing them in the Twin Tested community.

Thank you for participating in our challenges so far this year. It is so fun to do something as a collective group and see great results!

You can expect to see some killer workout gear deals, our favorite fitness gurus, and some tips for finding motivation throughout the month of March.

Here we go!
