Easy tips to travel wise and #ShowUCAIR

This week it is all about thinking ahead before you walk out your front door! Planning not only saves our planet, but it can also save you some major time. We are in the third week of our #ShowUCAIR challenge in partnership with UCAIR (Utah Clean Air Partnership) and we have already learned so much from them we wanted to share a few tips.

How to plan ahead

Before you leave the house try to make a plan for the day – or even better your entire week. This means checking the pantry and fridge for items that you will need to stock up on as well as any household items you may need.

Something that has helped immensely for Parker and I is getting a large print calendar to hang in our main kitchen area. That way we both know what is going on for the week and can make a running errand list so we both don’t go out and buy the same thing!

Now that you have mapped out your week you want to try to trip chain as much as possible. What is trip chaining? It is combining your trips in such a way that your car’s engine does not have time enough to cool down. If the engine stays warm and you are quick at all your stops you can majorly reduce your cold starts.

What is a cold start?

Educating myself on cold starts has been one of my proudest moments this month! It is easy to be naive about driving and the actual impact we have on our community’s air but reducing cold starts can have a HUGE impact!

So, what is a cold start? A cold start is when your car’s engine is colder than its normal operating temperature and you start it. (Go watch this UCAIR video for a great explanation) The quickest way to have your car reach its optimal temperature is to immediately drive the car, rather than let it idle. In other words, get in and go.

A recent study by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and Weber State University found that when a car reaches its optimal operating temperature, the catalytic converter can reduce emissions by 99 percent.

In addition, the study found that 75 percent of combined pollutants and emissions are emitted from a car during the first three minutes after a cold start.

UCAIR encourages all drivers to take simple steps to reduce emissions

Now that you know what a cold start is you see why UCAIR encourages all drivers to:

  • Trip chain: combine all car trips to reduce excess travel and increased cold starts
  • Avoid idling: by not warming up your car you can get in and go, helping the engine reach it’s optimum operating temperature faster.
  • Do as few cold starts throughout the day, or better yet skip the car altogether.

Buy a cleaner, more fuel-efficient car

If you are in the market for a new car, UCAIR has gathered some great resources to begin your research.

  • Purchase vehicles with an EPA Smog Rating of 8 or higher
  • The EPA provides a Green Vehicle Guide
  • The EPA also provides a list of SmartWay-Certified Vehicles. These vehicles are superior environmental performers and include standard gasoline-powered vehicles whose reduced emissions levels are comparable with electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Utah Clean Cities provides information about alternative fuel vehicles and fuel economy.

Look for the Energy Star label

President’s Day weekend is a great time to shop for discounted appliances and electronics. While you are scoping out all of the options make sure to look for the ENERGY STAR® label. It is the trusted, government-backed symbol for energy efficiency helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices. The label was established to: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants caused by the inefficient use of energy.

Turn down the heat

Another simple trick that Britt and I have both been trying to do this month is dropping our thermostats by two or three degrees. It is barely even noticeable and can make a big impact if we all do it. I (Brooke) am a hot sleeper by nature so I have not minded turning the knob a few degrees!

Who are sensitive groups when it comes to air quality?

  • The elderly
  • Children
  • People with lung disease or breathing issues like asthma

What kind of air do you want your kids to breathe?

While doing this challenge I just keep coming back to the fact that I want to make Utah’s air better for the upcoming generation. We have so many resources at our fingertips that make good decision making possible when thinking about our role in air quality. Kids are one of the more susceptible groups when it comes to bad air quality. I want my daughter to be able to breathe easy as she grows up!

This winter, think about the effect that your home and your car play on Utah’s air quality. Instead of complaining when an inversion sets in the valley, choose to use public transportation or skip the trip, in order to reduce emissions and breathe easier.

If you haven’t done so yet, we highly recommend following @showucair on Instagram to stay up to date and in the loop on what is happening in Utah when it comes to our air quality.

Half the Fat Monster Cookies

The other night I was supposed to bring a dessert to a party and had no clue to make so I searched my pantry. It turned out I had a couple bags of M&Ms, so I decided on Monster Cookies!

Brooke and I are not food bloggers, but we do love to bake! We have noticed many of our followers love to try new desserts, so add Monster Cookies to your list!

This Recipe is Easy

This recipe is simple, there are no crazy ingredients you need to pick up from a specialty store. They are a crowd-pleaser. Monster cookies are the perfect dessert when you are tired of regular good old chocolate chip cookies. The recipe takes minutes to throw together.

How to Find a Butter Substitute

After I got most of my ingredients out, I realized I didn’t have enough butter. Ahhh! The worst feeling when you really don’t feel like running to the grocery store. So, I improvised, cut the fat in the recipe in half by only using one stick of butter.

I found my magic ingredient in the back of my pantry – coconut oil! My favorite kind is Trader Joe’s Organic Coconut Oil because you can still taste a coconut flavor when you bake with it.

Now Throw it All Together

So, I threw all of the ingredients in my Kitchenaid mixer and went to town. I love the combination of adding regular M&Ms along with peanut butter M&Ms.

I got a lot of requests for the recipe, which has got to be a good sign, right? So, here it is! Make these next time you are up for trying a new cookie and I promise they won’t disappoint!

Monster Cookies Recipe

1 stick of butter, cubed and cold

3/4 Cup of Coconut Oil (not melted)

1 Cup brown sugar

1 Cup white sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 1/2 Cups Flour

1 Cup Quick Oats

1 Cup peanut butter M&Ms

1 Cup regular M&Ms

1/2-1 Cup chocolate chunks (based on your preference)

Baking Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a stand-up paddle mixer, mix butter, coconut oil, brown sugar, and white sugar for at least 2 minutes or until light and fluffy
  3. Add eggs and vanilla and mix slowly.
  4. Add all dry ingredients together
  5. Add M&Ms and chocolate chunks and do not overmix
  6. Use an ice cream scoop to place cookie dough on baking sheet
  7. Bake for 10 minutes

Utahns Can Clean the Air by Using Tier 3 Fuel

There’s a new type of gasoline in town and it eliminates up to 80% of emissions! The introduction of Tier 3 fuel is the culmination of five years of work by UCAIR and several state agencies.

So, where do you get it? Right now you can find Tier 3 fuel at all Speedway, Chevron and Texaco stations in the state of Utah! This is such great news for the air quality in the state of Utah. You can read more about it here.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has said no state would benefit more from implementing the Tier 3 gasoline standard than Utah.

The best news is probably the fact that Tier 3 fuel does not cost any additional money. It looks exactly like your regular gas pump and you can fill up as you regularly do.

Emissions from tailpipes cause roughly half of the air pollution along the Wasatch Front. If we all started using Tier 3 gasoline, we could see a tangible, huge difference in our air quality.

According to Chevron, Tier 3 is a set of federal EPA standards that requires petroleum refiners to reduce the sulfur content of gasoline from an annual average of 30 parts per million (ppm) to 10 ppm. It also sets motor vehicle emission standards to be phased in from model year 2017 through 2025.

The best thing you can do with this information is SHARE IT! Tell everyone you know about Tier 3 gasoline and encourage them to use it. You can easily share this blog post and get the information out there so we can see a bigger benefit from this exciting news.

In addition to using Tier 3 gasoline, it’s also important to remember the benefits of teleworking or carpooling if possible. It’s great to fill up with a better type of gasoline, but best if you don’t have to be on the road at all.

UCAIR x Twin Tested

If your employer needs to see proof of the benefits of teleworking, just have them look at the recent study done on state employees in Utah. They allowed them to telework 3, 4, or 5 days a week.

They saw a 20% increase in productivity! It was a huge success and they plan on expanding the program to all state employees.

When you give employees freedom to spend time at home while working, they get things done! They are free from other distractions and can focus all of their time and energy on whatever tasks are most important. It’s been proven again and again that teleworking promotes productivity.

If you would love the opportunity to carpool, but don’t know anyone personally who would work, why not look into the UTA Rideshare program. You can find more information about it on the UCAIR website.

Yes, it takes a little bit more time to figure out logistics when you’re carpooling, but I always think it makes the drive more fun to have someone to chat with.

It may be selfish to think this way, but carpooling also benefits you and your vehicle! You are going to be sharing the gas money and vehicle wear and tear with someone else, which is a huge benefit to you! Who wouldn’t like to cut their gas money in half every month?

One last thing about vehicles – did you know every car has a smog rating? Whatever kind of car you’re looking for, try to find one with the highest smog rating in its category. On a scale of 1 to 10, the higher the number, the better the vehicle is for our air. UCAIR has an easy to use app on their website where you can get the information about your car.

The results are fascinating! I found out that my current car, a Mazda CX-5 is not great – it has a 5 rating. I searched the same car, but a newer model and found it had a score of 7. So, the newer models in a lot of cars have much better smog ratings. It’s an easy thing to check before you make your next vehicle purchase.

You can look up the smog rating on your own car here.

If we’ve learned anything through this challenge, it’s that little changes can create a big impact! If you want to #ShowUCAIR about clearing the air, go here.

Mommy Tummy Fix

First off, this is not what you might think. It is not a crash diet just in time for New Year’s. The Mommy Tummy Fix is a program created specifically for women who have had a baby, created by physical therapist Jared Beckstrand, who specializes in postpartum health.

Why has this never been done before? I really don’t know.

When you have a baby, you go to one doctor’s appointment at six weeks postpartum and your doctor does a very quick check and that. is. it.

Yet, when I had a shoulder injury, I went to physical therapy for 4 months. When I noticed my knee aching, I went to physical therapy for a few weeks.

But when I went through the most extreme physical experience of my life, I did no physical therapy. I got zero information when it came to how I could help my body recover from the crazy experience called childbirth.

Instead, they simply say you are safe to go back to exercising. How is the average woman supposed to know how to exercise safely? Most of us don’t, so we go back to what we know – situps, crunches, planks, etc.

This is where the Mommy Tummy Fix comes in. Jared has created this program to walk you through exactly what you should and shouldn’t be doing after having a baby.

Since he is a trained postpartum specialist, he has created a program that includes not only a very specific, core exercise section but also a meal plan and exercise plan.

We did a Live Q & A with Jared on Instagram and wanted to share it here in case you didn’t get a chance to watch.

Q: How is the Mommy Tummy Fix program different from every other program out there?

A: This is the only program that includes the three elements needed for success – nutrition, exercise, and core-specific physical therapy. Postpartum women should not be doing the same programs as a 25-year-old guy. You need to be aware of how to help your body heal in the correct ways.

Q: Who is this program for?

A: This program was created after I had an experience with my wife. She had four kids and was working really hard in the gym after our fourth child, but was still not seeing results.

She obviously knows what I do for my profession and one day came to me and said you need to help me. Create a program for me and I will do it. Well, she was the first user of the Mommy Tummy Fix program and had a very positive experience. She finally got rid of her diastasis recti and felt confident again.

Q: What is diastasis recti and how do you know if you have it?

A: Separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) happens to 100% of women during the third trimester of pregnancy. Over time, the connective tissue between the halves of this muscle can regain tension and contract back down, however it doesn’t always return to the “pre-pregnancy” shape.

In fact, 60% of women still have a diastasis recti separation 6 weeks postpartum, 45% still had it at 6 months postpartum, and 33% still had it at 12 months postpartum.

This separation is one of the main culprits behind that “mommy tummy” and “still looking pregnant”. Watch our 1-minute video with Jared where he guides you through finding out if you have diastasis recti.

Q: What if I had my last child 15 years ago? Is it too late for me?

A: No, it’s never too late, but your progress will be slower. You need to be consistent and you will see progress. It may take a year, but a year focusing on your health and working towards it is much better than a year of doing nothing!

Q: What if I would like to have more children? Should I do this program in between pregnancies?

A: Yes! It is going to help keep things where they should be and assist your body in the healing process after each childbirth. Your body will benefit greatly from doing it every time you have had a child. Plus, you only have to buy the program once and can use it multiple times!

Q: How much does it cost?

A: It is regularly priced at $97, but you can get it for $67 right now with the discount code MOMMY30

It includes:

  • the core workout plan
  • private video demonstration
  • the daily checklist
  • the healthy dinners ebook
  • the postpartum fitness FAQs
  • Private FB group membership
  • Postpartum Pelvic Floor Rehab Guide
  • Ultimate LISS Cardio Guide

Help us clear the air this year!

We are excited to announce our January challenge, #ShowUCAIR. One thing we are all good at during the wintertime in Utah is complaining about the air quality, this year we want to change that! We have worked with UCAIR throughout our TV years and we are very happy to be partnering with them for this monthly challenge!

So what is UCAIR? UCAIR is a statewide clean air partnership created to make it easier for individuals and businesses to make small changes to improve Utah’s air. Every small change adds to a collective bigger step towards better health for everyone. We highly encourage everyone to follow them on Instagram @ShowUCAIR where they post helpful tips and facts about Utah’s air quality.

Our goal this month with UCAIR is to become educated on ways that we can actively be improving Utah’s air quality through everyday habits.

Here is the good news – Utah’s air is cleaner than it was 10 years ago! With vehicle updates and more awareness of our polluting habits, positive changes are already adding up!

During the month of January, we are going to share 4 EASY things to incorporate into your life that will clean the air! To kick things off we are challenging everyone to be IDLE FREE this week!

Here are a few places you could practice being idle-free this week:

  • School drop off and pick up line choose to turn off your car
  • Online grocery pickup choose to turn off your car
  • Dropping off something to a neighbor choose to turn off your car
  • Forgo “warming up your car” before driving it.
  • Drive your newest, greenest vehicle to reduce emissions. (to see how your car stacks up use the EPA’s calculator here)

Why is being idle-free so important? UCAIR explains it perfectly on their website,

“While the emissions from one idling vehicle may not seem like much when combined with the emissions from other vehicles, the cumulative effect can be significant. Idling also increases fuel costs. Ten seconds of idling can use more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it. A car idling for two minutes uses about the same amount of fuel it takes to drive one mile.”

I know some of us may avoid turning off our car because we like to crank the heater and be toasty warm. However, this week I challenge you to put on your puffy coat and some gloves before getting in the car. If you dress warm you will be much more willing to turn the key and be idle free!

One other fact that we found really interesting from UCAIR is that a well-maintained vehicle with 50,000 miles on it pollutes only 40 percent as much as the same vehicle that is poorly maintained. So now is a great time to get your car up to date on all emissions and filters!

This month is going to be so much fun, we have some fun giveaways coming up! We hope you’ll join us in working towards clean air together and showing that UCAIR!

2019 Year in Review

It has been a banner year for Twin Tested. We have worked so hard on our blog and have loved all of the opportunities that have come our way. We started monthly challenges in 2019 and they have been life-changing! Here’s a look back:

January: Get Ready Challenge

We kicked off our year of monthly challenges with the Get Ready Challenge. For us, January can be a tough month. One that often has left us feeling depressed and lethargic. So, in order to combat that we got ready every single day for the month!

Working in TV for 10 years helped both of us to trim our routines down to about 15 minutes – getting dressed + makeup + hair. So, it was not a huge time commitment, but it actually turned out to be a tough challenge.

What we learned

We learned that when you feel confident on the outside, you honestly feel better on the inside. It was easier to go through the day with purpose when I was dressed and ready to go. Also, I didn’t have to hide from anyone at the grocery store because I was in sweats ha!

February: Make Your Bed Challenge

This one seemed almost too easy! All we committed to was making our beds every single day. Well, for someone who was not great at it, this was the perfect challenge to create a habit.

I timed myself one day and it took me 27 seconds to make my bed! That is nothing. I read the book Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life… and Maybe the World. It was such a great way to look at it.

What we learned

We learned that if you begin your day by accomplishing a task, it sets a great precedent for the rest of your day! Something so simple can make a huge impact.

March: The MOVE Challenge

move fitness challenge
never be bored on the treadmill again, here are some ideas to keep moving!

For the month of March, we decided we wanted to make an effort to move every day! That meant being more intentional about our workouts and getting outside to go on walks with our girls more.

It was a great challenge to focus on something that made me physically feel good. It also got me outside more, which is always a good thing!

What we learned

We learned that getting fresh air every single day is so important. Something about being outside and moving your body really does make you happier and we sincerely felt that.

April: Love Where You Live Challenge

Things to do in Salt Lake City

This challenge was so much fun! We got to be tourists in our own city, partnering with Visit Salt Lake to make it all happen. We used our Connect Passes to get into 16 different attractions in Salt Lake City. We visited everywhere from the Tracy Aviary to Red Butte Gardens.

Being lifelong Utahns, we thought we knew everything there is to know about Salt Lake City. We were so wrong! Taking time to explore our own city was such an adventure. We had so much fun throughout the month.

What we learned

We deepened our love of Salt Lake City! It is such a beautiful place with so much to offer people of all ages. We will definitely keep up our exploring and quest to discover new things in our beloved city.

May: The Book Your Bucket List Disaster

Windmill in the town of Karterados

This month did not go as we had planned. We were approached to go on a trip to Greece and ended up inviting several friends and family members. Well, when we landed in Greece, we found out that the tour company we booked through had not planned anything that was on the itinerary – no hotels, no transportation, no activities — nothing! You can read the entire story here.

Santorini Bells

We do have an update to this story. A few weeks ago, we were contacted by the police, letting us know that the owner of the tour company is being criminally charged.

This is a huge relief after working for months with several different law enforcement agencies and victims to bring her down.

What we learned

Sometimes things don’t go as planned and that’s when you pivot! We made the decision to leave the group and planned an amazing trip with our friends and family. So, the first day was a nightmare, but we honestly had a fabulous time in Greece after that! We also feel like this was meant to happen to us because we had the platform and journalism skills needed to bring the owner to justice after she had defrauded hundreds of other people.

June: Eat More Veggies Challenge

This challenge was perfect for the summer with fresh produce galore! For us, it’s a lot more fun to eat veggies when they’re coming straight out of the garden. We learned a couple new salad recipes that we are still making – they’re that good.

What we learned

Sometimes putting the focus on something you know you should be doing for one month is really effective. I tried new veggies – looking at you eggplant! Also, just getting in the kitchen and trying new things was a lot of fun.

July: Put Your Phone Down Challenge

no more distracted driving

This challenge was created to stop distracted driving. No phone use while driving. That means no texting, no mapping, no music changing, nothing. This didn’t seem like it would be that hard, but wow, was it eye-opening! Realizing how often I reach for my phone while in the car was scary.

I committed to doing this and made a habit out of it. I also came to the realization that when I used my phone in the car I was seriously endangering myself, my baby in the backseat and everyone else on the road.

What we learned

We learned that wake up calls are necessary. We all start doing small things and sometimes let them turn into big things. This challenge was empowering in that we saw that we can truly make a difference, starting with ourselves.

August: Lifelong Learning Challenge

brooke and britt standing with governor's declaration

We wanted to do an education-centric challenge during 2019 and this one turned out even better than we hoped! We partnered with the University of Utah Lifelong Learning program to encourage everyone, no matter their age, to never stop learning!

We got to try out several of the classes including watercolor, royal icing cooking decorating and fearless abstract painting. It was a blast!

What we learned

You are truly never too old to stop learning! Trying new things is fun and makes you a more well rounded, interesting person.

September: Money Boost Challenge

Brooke and Britt talking about the spending freeze challenge

As a self-proclaimed finance dummy, this one was so good for me! We partnered with Experian to become more financially fit. We learned about credit scores and how to increase them. We also learned more about budgeting and making smart financial decisions.

We challenged ourselves with a weeklong spending freeze and it was definitely more challenging than I thought it would be.

What we learned

Mindless spending = wasted money. We learned to be more intentional with our spending and to stop impulse spending.

October: Get Hygge Challenge

the art of hygge book

We heard about this new trend that started in Denmark and encouraged coziness and embracing cooler temperatures. It was the perfect challenge to send us into Fall!

We loved making yummy new recipes and lighting candles in our home. We increased the cozy and had a lot of fun doing it.

What we learned

Perspective changes everything. Usually, we are mourning the loss of summer and dreading cooler temperatures, but this really helped change that attitude.

November: Celebrate Everyday Challenge

This was so much fun! Our goal with this was to find a reason to celebrate something every day – big or small. We also loved the idea of celebrating those around us.

It was a wonderful exercise in enjoying every moment and taking time to celebrate accomplishments big and small.

What we learned

There is always something or someone to celebrate and the people who cultivate that attitude are the best kind of people.

December: Make it Meaningful Challenge

Brooke and Britt at Ancestry headquarters

For this month, we partnered with one of our favorite companies, Ancestry, to Make it Meaningful. Having taken DNA tests from Ancestry last year, we had already dipped our toes into our DNA and family history. It was so special to take an entire month to focus on it.

A couple of highlights from the month include Brooke’s ancestry wall that she created, our framed family recipes and our grandmother’s completed life story.

What we learned

britt, brooke, parker, and sam chatting over table topics

Family is special and worth investing time in. This challenge brought me to tears multiple times in gratitude for my family and those who have gone before.

Thank you for joining us on all of our challenges this year! They have changed our lives for the better and we so appreciate all of your love and support.

Take the photo – you won’t regret it

‘Tis the season for endless family parties and get-togethers. We have loved partnering with Ancestry this month for the #MakeitMeaningful challenge to make an intentional effort to learn more about our family history! Throughout this month we have covered:

  • Table topics: How to improve the conversation around the dinner table and go far beyond talking about the weather. Ancestry has created a pack of easy to take with you questions and if you want to see a bunch of them check out this blog post.
  • Ancestry Gallery Wall: How to DIY your own gallery wall at home filled with meaningful photos and mementos of your ancestors.
  • How to get DNA results and compare them with family members

We gave each other the same thing for Christmas

We hope your Christmas was full of fun and family this year. We definitely made each other laugh when we realized we gifted each other the EXACT SAME THING! Twins man, it is ridiculous how much we think alike sometimes. Now I know that you are wondering what we gave each other, we both gifted the other with a monthly subscription for Infinitely Loft. Loft’s new clothing rental service. So we will both be looking GREAT in January haha!

Brooke and Britt with their mom holding framed recipes

Framed recipe from my grandma

Aside from the subscription Britt went above and beyond for me and snagged adorable leopard print shoes for me and then made a framed recipe of one of my grandmother’s recipes! I absolutely LOVE IT and it quickly found its new home next to my kitchen sink.

If you are looking for a quick and meaningful gift next year, bookmark that one! Britt said it was pretty simple to put together. But like I said, I will treasure it forever and love to have a little piece of my grandma in a place I see every day.

The final part of the make it meaningful challenge

And now for the last part of the challenge. During this winter break, we are making the effort to snap more pictures of the holiday festivities with family.

The picture does not need to be perfect

A few guidelines when taking pictures during the holidays:

  • Make sure to snap a few candids, those are usually the most fun to look back on. Especially when kids are involved!
  • Don’t fret about every detail being perfect, just try to capture the essence of the moment
  • Be sure to include your older relatives in the photos. I am so glad that I got a picture with my grandma last year at our Christmas party that is now a treasured memory after she passed away in June. I also love to try and do four-generation photos like the one above.
  • Large group shots are possible. My husband’s family broke some sort of record this year by snapping a photo with more than 80 family members in it! However, they had set the equipment up beforehand which made it quick and easy.

Get in the photo

After my paternal grandmother passed away this June I have tried to take a good amount of photos with my maternal grandmother who is 91. From her stylish outfits to her warm smile I want to document it all for future generations. Make sure you get in the photo with your grandparents, the love they have for their grandkids always shines through.

Looking back on memories

This year my maternal grandmother finished her life history and bound it into a beautiful 40-page book. I absolutely loved reading through it on Christmas and I learned a lot about my grandma – including where she was born! I thought I knew all these years, but I had it wrong.

During this partnership with Ancestry, I have been able to dig into some statistics they have put together over the years. For example, the fact that more than a third (39%) of Americans don’t know where their grandparents were born shocked me. That is until I read my grandmother’s life history and realized I was one of them!

What is the meaning of your last name?

For some homework this week I am diving deep into the origin of my maiden name, Graham. Over the years I have been told that it is of Scottish origin but I now have the desire to learn more and really dig into my roots.

I challenge you to dig into your family’s roots and find out where your last name came from. Who knows what you will discover! I have found that discussing DNA results can be really fun in a variety of settings with friends and family. And if you still have not gotten your DNA tested, do it already! Click here for the link and it will be to your house in no time.

Thanks as always for following along on this challenge, it has been really meaningful for us this December. The January challenge will be announced shortly!

3 Reasons to Share Your DNA Results With Family

This month we’re focusing on Making it Meaningful with our friends at Ancestry. Last year, we both took Ancestry DNA tests and then got to compare our results.

Ancestry, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics, harnesses the information found in family trees, historical records, and DNA to help people gain a new level of understanding about their lives.

We were shocked to learn that although we are identical twins, our Ancestry DNA test results were different! You can read the full post here.

Since we are trying to make connections to our ancestors and learn about some of their individual stories, we decided to compare DNA results with our parents as well. They both took Ancestry tests last year as well.

More than 20 billion records have been added to the site over the past two decades, and Ancestry adds an average of two million records to its website each day based on the average of record growth over the last five years.

#1 The results will surprise you!

We were expecting to see very similar results, but to our surprise, everyone’s is different. It’s absolutely amazing to see how detailed the results on Ancestry’s website are.

When I was discussing results with my parents, my mom mentioned that she always thought she was 100% from England and Scotland, but was surprised to find a large part of her DNA was from France. She has always felt a special connection to France, so it was really meaningful to her.

#2 Connect to your roots

I’m amazed at how a detailed map can make you feel more fully yourself. It’s something that happens when you start learning about ancestors. I have started to feel more complete as a person. To know that all of these stories of those who have gone before you really are there for you to learn from.

It makes you feel more globally connected to realize we all came from somewhere. It is really special to recognize where your ancestors came from and the lives that they led. You might even find yourself finding a new hero or heroine to look up to.

#3 Honor your ancestors

For me, it’s become a way to honor my ancestors and all of the sacrifices they made. If they hadn’t made many of those sacrifices, I would not have the privileged life I do.

In my travels and education, it became clear that Americans fall behind when it comes to cultures and places where ancestors are revered and honored. I realized that in my home, ancestors were largely forgotten.

That’s the entire reason for the Make it Meaningful challenge. Not forgetting those who came before and honoring them by learning about their lives and stories.

I’ve done this largely on the Ancestry website where it is so simple to create a family tree and learn more about ancestors.

Ancestry members have created 100 million family trees containing more than 13 billion ancestral profiles and have uploaded and attached more than 330 million photographs, scanned documents, and written stories to their trees.

It is so amazing to put a face with a name. It really makes my DNA results and family history come alive for me. The photo above is my Great Great Grandmother Margaret Jarvis. So fascinating to find out that she worked as a midwife in Boston and then had one daughter when she was 37 years old.

Here are a couple of fascinating facts:

  • Ancestry users can access records dating back to the 13th century.
  • Ancestry has over 6 billion historical records for the United States.
  • Ancestry hosts records from over 80 countries worldwide.

So, I challenge you to go over DNA results with your loved ones and learn about one ancestor from each of your results.

How to create an ancestry gallery wall in your home

Brooke and Britt at Ancestry headquarters

I have wanted to create an ancestry wall in my home for some time now, and I decided I was going to complete it as part of the #MakeitMeaningful challenge with Ancestry! Parker and I chose the wall when you first walk right into our home. We wanted something meaningful in that spot and I think the ancestry gallery wall accomplishes that.

There are a lot of options for an ancestry wall

If you look up ancestry walls on Pinterest you are bombarded with some interesting options! I knew that I wanted mine to look minimal, streamlined, yet not totally matchy-matchy. You want to make sure you know what look you are going for before you begin.

The ideal ancestry wall

Enter, my friend Mary and her extraordinary ancestry wall pictured below! #GOALS right?! I grew up with Mary and her family, they have always been very into genealogy and sharing their ancestor’s stories. I love how she has displayed her family members in such a beautiful way on the walls of her home. After seeing what Mary did with her wall, I knew anything was possible!

Ancestry walls are never “complete”

At this point, my wall is made up of seven different pieces. This number will grow and change over the years to include many more pieces. I am going to walk you through how I chose the pieces for my wall and how I did it all at less than $100.

The supplies you will need

  • Frames: I had the best luck with IKEA and Walmart frames. They are affordable and come in neutral color palettes. I also like the 10 x 10 square shape for gallery walls. I did a mixture of black and white frames with an oval-shaped frame mixed in for good measure.
  • Photo printing: I printed my photos with Walmart photo. They seemed to have the most options for random printing sizes which is what I needed. You can also do one-hour photo pickup which makes it an ideal weekend project!
  • Layout: I used plain sheets of paper cut into the sizes of my various frames to measure things out on the wall beforehand to see how I liked the layout. I highly recommend doing this step before starting anything else!

Where to find photos

My family has a smattering of photos of our ancestors, none of which are digital and in the same place. So, I searched high and low until I was excited about my photo collection.

Grandma Audrey at Brooke and Parker's wedding

We have a portrait of Parker’s dad Rory, who passed away 5 years ago from cancer, that I really love that was given to us in a beautiful frame. I decided to build our entire ancestry wall around that photo. We miss our Papa Rory and it is nice to see his smiling face in our home.

Start by looking at the photos you already have

To begin to build the ancestry wall I started by looking at cherished photos of our loved ones in my own collection. I found one of me and my grandma at my wedding that exudes happiness for me and another of Parker’s grandma who was a florist holding a bouquet. These were great photos to build off of in the beginning.

Grandma and Grandpa Page wedding photo

I have always loved my maternal grandparent’s wedding photo. It is formal and my grandma chose to wear a tiara that looks much more like a regal crown and I just love every little thing about it! From the flowers to her dress it brings me joy seeing my grandparents as a young couple in love.

Classic wedding photos

To get my hands on their wedding photo (to make a copy), I was given early access to my grandmother’s life story. In my extended family, it is customary to write your own history. Some are short, some are long, but all of them have treasured photos included.

Official portraits from the past

Parker joined in the photo gathering and found a portrait of his paternal grandfather from his pilot days. He has his goggles on his head and leather jacket and the photo is one of my favorite parts of the ancestry wall!

Use your DNA results to help in your search for photos

I started to look back at my family history thanks to Ancestry and my DNA results which make it easy to track my family’s roots in Europe. After researching for a bit I came across a story about one of my ancestors named Margaret who came across to America in 1884 with many young children having recently been widowed. I was able to find a picture of the S.S. Wyoming ship that she was on while on her journey to America. Ancestry DNA kits are the perfect holiday gift and right now they are only $59!

The ship my ancestors sailed on to America

I knew I wanted the photo of this ship on my wall as a reminder of what my ancestors have gone through to live in a beautiful place with the freedoms that I enjoy. Not only that, but I am reminded of the grit and strength of my ancestors and that hopefully some of that has passed on to me.

The Hackett castle

Parker’s family hales from Ireland and I wanted some part of his Irish heritage included in our ancestry wall. As I was talking with him about this he showed me a picture of Hackett castle in Ireland and I knew that was the perfect thing to include from Ireland. It is covered in beautiful green ivy and again, reminds us of the people that have come before us.

You can include other heirlooms on the wall, not just photos

I balanced all of the photos on the wall by including a banner that is screen printed with a special message from Parker’s dad Rory. Rory signed every letter that he sent to Parker while he was on his mission with this phrase. It is special to us and another part of our family. I hope to add more special heirlooms like this in the future.

Teach the younger generation about your family

Our new ancestry wall is a great teaching tool when it comes to Lila learning about her family. She loves looking at the photos and learning who these people are and how they are a vital party of our family story. I am grateful that I will be able to continuously add to the wall over the years and continue to learn stories about those who have come before me.

Your ancestors are watching out for you

I truly believe that we are surrounded by angels here on earth. And what other angels would be more concerned for you and your family’s well-being than your own ancestors? I think we can find strength and courage from our ancestors and their stories on a daily basis. I am blown away by the hardships and trials that they pushed through in their lives. I am also so grateful for the relationships that I had with many of them here on earth and I want to remember them on a regular basis.

December Challenge: Make it Meaningful

We are so excited to be partnering with Ancestry on our final challenge of 2019! How in the world has an entire year passed of doing these challenges? We have learned so much and truly loved it.

For our final challenge during the month of December, we want to do something meaningful. Immediately, we thought of Ancestry. They are changing lives and connecting the world to their past and present.

We learned firsthand how eye-opening it can be to take an Ancestry DNA test. Although we are identical twins, we got completely different DNA test results! You can read that blog post here.

How to Make it Meaningful

So, for the month of December, it was clear our challenge should be MAKE IT MEANINGFUL.

For us, this means making family interactions more valuable this year by trying something new. Instead of talking about the weather, we are going to ask real, thought-provoking questions.

We are realizing what a wealth of knowledge our family members are and how little we have dug into the past.

Brooke at Britt at Ancestry.com's headquarters in Lehi, Utah.

According to a new Ancestry® survey, nearly three in four Americans (70%), even more so millennials (80%), wish conversations with their family during the holidays were more meaningful.

So, everything from conversation starters to family tree connections are going to be covered this month in the challenge.

People Crave Connection

We realized in creating this challenge that we are really missing out on connecting to our ancestors and it turns out many Americans feel the same way.

In a recent Ancestry study, 37% of Americans “strongly agree” they wish more members of their family knew about their family
history.

This is likely because there is a knowledge gap – more than one in ten (14%) Americans know nothing about their family tree. More than half (59%) of Americans don’t know the year their grandparents were born.

Do you know when your grandparents were born? I’m embarrassed to say I have no clue! It’s a wake-up call for me to ask my one remaining grandmother all of these questions while she is still alive and I have the chance.

Simple Conversation Starters

The good news is, all it takes is a simple conversation to change this!

To start things off, I have 10 simple ideas for conversation starters you can use at your upcoming family gatherings to make them more meaningful.

  1. What is your most treasured family recipe?
  2. Is there a legendary love story in your family?
  3. Tell me about a family tradition that goes back generations?
  4. What family story have you heard once too often?
  5. Is there a family heirloom you treasure?
  6. What is your ideal place for a family reunion?
  7. In a movie about your life, who would play you and your family members?
  8. If you could invite any famous person to join your family for dinner who would you choose?
  9. Do you have an infamous family member?
  10. What three adjectives would your family use to describe you?

We Hope You Join Us

This is a challenge that is close to our hearts and we hope you will join us in connecting to your past. Each of our stories is so unique, it’s a tragedy when we don’t take the time to find out where we came from and who came before us.
