Gift Guide for your beauty loving friends

It’s the happiest time of the year! It’s also the time of year when beauty companies put together holiday gift sets that combine some of their best products at a much lower price. Win! We picked some of our tried and true favorites from Ulta to share with you this year.

gift-guide-g-chi

CHI gift set $99We have loved our CHI straighteners since college. They just work so well and last forever. The only thing better than a regular CHI is a travel size CHI! We hate lugging all of our hair products to work and on vacation and this little kit makes it so easy. Essentials Travel Set includes a CHI travel size Hair Dryer, CHI travel size Hairstyling Iron, mini brush and travel size CHI Style and Stay Spray in a free thermal-protectant carrying case. Normally you can buy either the blow dryer or straightener for $99, it’s a steal!

gift-guide-g-philosophy

Amazing Grace Eau de Parfum Gift Set  $57Philosophy just knows what they are doing when it comes to scents. We each have many of their body wash scents and decided to try one of their perfumes. This is the ultimate CLEAN scent. If you like crisp and fresh, you will love this smell.

gift-guide-g-lorac

Lorac pro contour palette $45

We are big fans of contour kits and this one combines our two favorites – it has creams and powders. If you have ever looked at a professional makeup artist’s arsenal of products, they always have both. This kit not only has all of this, it also comes with a cool brush and a handy step-by-step guide for flawless application. gift-guide-g-love-your-lips

Ulta Love your Lips CollectionThis is the perfect gift for the friend who loves to try new lipsticks or glosses. It’s filled with six different kinds of lip products. One thing we have noticed about Ulta lip products is that they are priced much less than brand names, but they work just as well. Right now we are really loving lip crayons because they make application so easy and quick.

gift-guide-g-lano

Lano Lips 101 Ointment Strawberry Multi-Balm $13.50A friend told us about this stuff and now we can’t live without it. You know when winter comes and your lips get all crackly and flaky? This totally fixes that problem. If we are not on camera, we most likely have this stuff on. It gives your lips the perfect amount of shine and stays on forever. Britt sleeps with it on her lips every night.

We hope you are enjoying this beautiful time of year!

Gift Guide for your handsome husband

Ladies! We’ve got some fun/necessary gift ideas for your man. Brooke and I both tried all of these products on our husbands and they are HUGE fans – as in they are asking for the products for Christmas this year, so here ya go!

guy-gift-guide Art of Shaving starter kit $30

I gave this gift set to Sam a few years ago and now he asks for it every year. The fluffy brush makes shaving feel luxurious and fancy! guy-gift-guide-2 Jack Black Online Only The Jack Pack $49

This company makes great products for men. If your guy is afraid of face wash or moisturizer, this is a fun pack to ease them into it. Jack Black knows the scents and textures that guys like. Sam has been using their products for a few years now.

guy-gift-guide-5 American Crew King of Grooming Gift Set: $29.95

This gift pack is such a steal! Normally each of these products is around $20, so to get them all in a cute little travel bag is great! Even super picky guys love Crew hair products. He also loves having his own toiletry travel bag, so he doesn’t have to share with me because I’m a bit of a space hog when it comes to packing. My favorite thing about these Crew products? They smell SO good!

guy-gift-guide-3

Micro Groomsman Lithium Ion Trimmer (AKA the best nose hair trimmer) $15:

Awkward as it may sound, this is a great gift! Often times, it is something guys don’t want to buy themselves, but they need it! Plus, it’s only $15. Perfect little stocking stuffer. Cordless too!

guy-gift-guide-secret-santa

Poo Pourri Secret Santa: $9.99

Ok prepare yourself. You spray this stuff in the toilet before you go #2 and it hides the smell. Ahhh that was hard to type. So gross, but when it actually works you’ll be glad you have some! We got some Poo Pourri as a gag gift a few years ago and have been loyalists ever since. At $10 a piece, you can get one for every bathroom.

Happy Holiday gift giving!

Steal or Splurge: Lip Liner

collage-2016-11-16-1 {I’m wearing Urban Decay on the left, Palladio on the right}

We are 100% in love with lip liner lately. We realized if you cover your entire lip with liner and then either – a) leave it plain b) put gloss over top or c) apply lipstick over – it lasts all day long! It just stays on really well and defines the lip. So, after trying lots and lots of different kinds – we wanted to compare cheap vs. expensive.

We tried out very similar lip liner – the only difference is the price.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Pencil $20

Palladio Waterproof Lip Liner $4.99 (certain colors are $2.99)

Our final takeaway – they work the same! Both stayed on all day and held their color. So for this one, we say definitely go for the steal!

How to accentuate your best facial features in photos

DSC_0058

Britt and I are often asked what makeup is best for TV or photos. After more than 6 years of trial and error on TV we have found our time-tested favorites. Today I am sharing the products that help accentuate your best features. It’s important to note that foundation is a must when you are in front of a camera. It evens out your skin tone and makes it so you don’t look washed out. We’ve shared our foundation favorites in a previous post here. The three features I like to accentuate in photos tend to be: eyebrows, lips, and cheeks.

Lips: After years of being a lip gloss girl I have discovered the benefit of lip liner. Don’t worry, this is not the brown lip liner of the 90’s. My very favorite is made by Butter London. The color is “Sweet Something” and can be used under practically any other gloss or lipstick. However, I really love it plain. The key is to line your ENTIRE lip, not just the outside. It has a matte finish that looks great on camera and is not too shiny.

Brows: Eyebrows seem to be the name of the game in 2016. Everyone is making theirs bigger and bolder. I like to keep mine looking semi-natural by using a brow gel. Fiona Stiles has created a product that helps separate your eyebrow hairs while enhancing them. I use it every single day!

Cheeks: Since learning how to apply blush properly (only on the apples of the cheeks) I have loved the little pop of color it can add to my face. Powder blushes are great for this but can fade quickly. For longer lasting wear, especially in the summertime, I like to use Tarte Fearless Cheek Stain.

Britt and I plan to continue our makeup tips throughout the summer by sharing our favorites!

Twin Tested: 3 Minute Gel Manicure

DSC_0259 DSC_0264 DSC_0289

Britt and I have been rambling on for years about our love for Red Carpet Manicure. Instead of spending hours at the nail salon we have been able to whip out a professional looking manicure in under an hour at home. Well, there is a new product on the market that is a GAME CHANGER! We seriously cannot contain our excitement about this, therefore, we are telling everyone! The geniuses behind Red Carpet Manicure have combined the base coat, color, and top coat into ONE BOTTLE! You now paint on one coat, cure it for 45 seconds under the LED light, and voila a perfect gel manicure. And lucky for all of us they have the same awesome colors to choose from, our current favorite is Creme de la Creme. Run, don’t walk to your nearest Ulta Beauty store to check out the new product. (Right now all the coral hues are on sale for $7.99!

As a side note, we want to mention that we have tried the other “gel” nail polish products on the market like Sally Hansen, etc. and Red Carpet is a much more durable, long-lasting product. We only share the products with you that we regularly use and love.

5 Best Beauty Finds of 2015

LAUREN-CONRAD-1

As you know, we love trying all the latest and greatest products when it comes to beauty. This is called “Twin Tested” after all. This year we have been pleasantly surprised by a few products. Here is a list of our top 5 favorite finds:

1. Ulta Contouring Powder Kit: We jumped on the contouring band wagon this year and there is no turning back now. This kit is super affordable from Ulta Beauty and comes with a guide that makes the application fail proof.

2. NAKED Eye Palette: Matte, matte, matte! We will never go back to using anything other than this eye palette.

3. Unite Expanda Volume Root Booster: Our genius, hair painter Aubrey gave us this product. It has now become a necessity every single day. It works as a dry shampoo/root booster/hairspray all in one. AMAZING.

4. Eyelash Extensions: What a blessing! We found a new friend that is able to keep our lashes on point while at the same time acting as our therapist. Score! No, but really we are so thankful for the time these save us every single day.

5. Red Carpet Manicure: We have said it once and we will say it again. If you are looking to save money in 2016 – do your nails at home! We love this kit and our nails look great for 2+ weeks at a time.

Hope this list helps!

What kind of razor do you use?

tn_Fusion_Razor

So, we really want to know… what kind of razor do you use? For the last 15 years we have been avid users of pink, girly Venus razors. That is until we started stealing our husbands. You know that moment you realize you have misplaced your razor and your husband’s is the only one in sight? Well, come to find out they work a lot better! Many have twice the number of blades and tend to have a much longer life span. We are hooked. A couple things we’ve learned about shaving after doing it for 15 years….

  • Shave at the end of your shower. At that point the steam and heat from the water have opened up your hair follicles and you will be less likely to get razor burn
  • Shaving cream matters. The old soap trick doesn’t quite cut it. Shaving cream creates a smooth barrier and makes legs stay smoother a lot longer.
  • Now I’m going to contradict myself and say if you’re in a pinch lotion does the trick. It’s definitely not as good as shaving cream, but it gets the job done.
  • Razors only last so long. Better to just buy the jumbo pack at Costco so you don’t feel guilty every time you have to throw one away.

Do you guys have any other shaving tricks up your sleeve that we don’t know about? Please share!

Finding the Right Lipstick Color

IMG_6006
trestique makeup

We go through a lot of lipstick around here. When you have to dress up like a drag queen for TV every day, it’s easy to go through makeup like water! One thing that Brooke and I both love to change every day is our lipstick. It is an easy way to spice up any outfit. We are always trying to find the perfect color with the perfect texture.

Trestique just came out with a new lip crayon that has gloss on the other end – genius! Plus, the whole thing is magnetic. Our favorite colors are “Nammos Pink” and “Nantucket Nude”. I like to do the crayon first and then put gloss on top, but if you like to have a more sheer finish, you can apply the gloss first. I have never really understood people who loved nude lip color, that is until I tried “Nantucket Nude”. I wore it for my birthday dinner because it made me feel sophisticated and summery.

Trestique makes crayons for all different types of makeup: eyeliner, blush, and even foundation. We loved all of them because they are compact and you can easily throw them in your purse without damaging them. I just get so excited when makeup companies come up with something new! What lipsticks have you loved lately?

Steal or Splurge Contour Kits

Britt and I have jumped into the contouring world head first… and after a little practice we are loving it! We’ve all seen the pictures on Pinterest that show how to contour your makeup, but end up looking more like Halloween tutorials. {these pictures can be terrifying} However, if you follow the guide and use light strokes it works like magic. We now use our contour kits instead of bronzer or highlighter, because it contains both products. It’s also a great space saver if you need to finish your makeup on the go, you can just throw it in your bag (oh wait, I’m the only one that finishes my makeup at my desk, right?).  Britt and I have been testing out countless products over the years and wanted to share our two favorites. One is a steal and one is a splurge.

Splurge: Anastasia Contour Kit $40

We are pretty obsessed with every item in the Anastasia makeup line and this kit is no different. The palette has 6 different shades to choose from which makes for a more natural look. It also comes with a guide that shows you where to use each color – so helpful! This is a good choice for someone who plans to contour regularly. Below is my before & after after using the Anastasia kit, it makes a big difference! (I also contoured my lips with regular lipstick & a highlighter.)

Steal: Ulta Contour Kit $18

ulta contour kit

This kit has the same layout as the Anastasia edition. However, the price makes it more approachable for anyone that is still feeling intimidated by contouring. It is a great starter kit, perfect for experimenting and seeing what looks best on your face. Also, the powder is in larger containers, so technically you are getting more bang for your buck with this kit. Plus, look at the handy dandy guide that comes right on the cover! Britt’s before & after pics using this kit are shown below.

5 Keys to Flawless Foundation

Flawless Foundation7 When Brooke and I hit the age of 12 a terrible thing started happening… zits! We were cursed with acne and it took years to find out how to get it under control. Our advice for that — go to a great dermatologist and get on something that cures it from the inside out. You can try all the topical creams in the world, but you have to stop the actual cause of acne and I can almost guarantee it’s not because your face is dirty. For us, it was birth control pills and an antibiotic. Worked wonders and cleared up our faces. Anyway… along the way we experimented with just about every concealer and foundation out there. We finally found a favorite that does everything a great foundation is supposed to: covers, blends and makes skin look flawless. People ask us quite a bit what kind of foundation we use, so we figured it was time to do a post about it. Either we are total cake faces and they are trying to give us a hint, or they actually want to know, so if you fall into the “actually want to know” category, here are 5 keys to flawless foundation!

1. Moisturize Your Skin

There is no foundation that will look good if your skin is not moisturized. It will look splotchy and flaky and be hard to apply evenly. We love Phytomer Hydracontinue 12 Hour Moisturizing Flash gel.  If you’re looking for a lower price point, Cetaphil works great and can be purchased at the grocery store.

Flawless Foundation1 2. Use a Primer

No one has perfectly even skin and this product fills in holes and smooths bumps, plus it feels like silk on your skin. Our hands down favorite primer is Too Faced Primed and Poreless. Let your moisturizer dry before you apply it. Primer gives your foundation something to stick to, which will make it last longer.

Flawless Foundation3 3. Find a Foundation You Love

We have used everything from Covergirl to $65/bottle foundation. After years of buying and trying, we have found one that does everything you want a foundation to do. Our favorite kind is Makeup Forever HD Makeup. Now don’t stop reading because you know this stuff is kind of pricey at $43 per bottle. It is worth the price! It will not clog your pores or make you break out. It lasts a very long time. I have applied it on dozens of different skin tones and textures and it looks great on everyone. We love finding great deals on other makeup products, but spending a little extra on foundation can go a long way. It is on your skin nearly every day, so you want a high quality product that is not causing more problems than it’s concealing. (climbing off my foundation soap box  :) )

Flawless Foundation5 4. Use Your Fingers to Apply Foundation

This is so not politically correct in the makeup world, but fingers are truly the best makeup brushes for foundation. If I am doing someone else’s makeup,  I will do the main application with a brush and then blend with my fingers. If I am doing my own makeup, I hate wasting foundation, so I just use my fingers. Actress Diane Kruger said it best, “I never understand makeup artists who only use sponges and brushes. Cosmetics need to be worked into the skin in order to look natural.” By the way, she always does her own makeup and it always looks fabulous.

Flawless Foundation6

5. Set with a Powder

I know everyone loves a dewy glow, but in order to make foundation stay on your face, you must set with a powder. I love using MAC Studio Fix or Setting Powder from Dermablend. This will ensure that your makeup does not slide off your face 5 minutes after application. I do use a brush for the setting powder and apply a light layer on my entire face.

I hope this answers a lot of your questions, but please feel free to ask away if I missed something!
